Indian Origin MP Braverman sworn in UK's Royal court of Justice
London: It is a proud moment for India again. Indian-origin MP Suella Braverman was sworn in the United Kingdom as Attorney General. Braverman was appointed by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to the cabinet role of Attorney General for England and Wales earlier in February. She took oath for the post at Royal Courts of Justice in London.
She is the first female Attorney General to be appointed by a Conservative Party government and she is the second woman to be appointed to the role in British legal history.
A 39-year-old minister is a barrister and a law graduate from Cambridge University specializing in Public Law and Judicial Review.
"It is a privilege to be sworn in as attorney general and a moment I will cherish as the second woman to be appointed to this historic role", said Braverman after the ceremony.
"Restoring confidence in the criminal justice system would be my top priority. I want to thank my predecessor for his work in this area and his distinguished service to the government", she added in reference to the previous attorney general Geoffery Cox.
A Pro-Brexit campaigner, she was elected to the House of Commons in 2015 from Farham for the first time and re-elected in 2017 and 2019.
She has chaired the European Research Group which includes Conservative MPs favoring a hard Brexit.
Robert Buckland, the Lord Chancellor and United Kingdom Secretary of State for Justice, welcomed the new entrant to the 'vital and historic role' as the chief legal adviser for the government of the UK.
Along with Buckland, Chief Justice Ian Burnett and the chairman of the Bar Council, Amanda Pinto was there to attended her swearing-in ceremony in the Royal Court of Justice.
'The relationship between the law officer and lord chancellor is a significant link. I look forward to working closely with the attorney on matters relating to the rule of law, which is the keystone of our democracy and a major factor in our success as a civilized and prosperous nation', said Buckland.
Her role comprises big responsibilities of overseeing the work of the law officers' department, which includes the independent prosecuting authorities, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Serious Fraud Office.
Braverman, whose maiden name is Suella Fernandes. She was born in London to migrant parents from Kenya and Mauritius with Indian roots. Her parents' ancestors were from Goa and South India. Her schooling was from Heathfield School in London and she studied law at Queen's College, University of Cambridge. Then, she went to complete her Masters in Law from the University of Paris specialized in 'public law and judicial review'.
She has been MP for Fareham in south-east England since 2015 and a vocal supporter of Brexit. Previously, she served as a minister in the former Department for Exiting the European Union. As a former member of the Attorney General's panel of 'treasury counsel', she has defended the United Kingdom Home Office in immigration cases in the past.
