Who is Kotnis as China mentioned while showing gratefulness to India over Coronavirus help?

Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong is grateful for India's kindness in helping China against the Coronavirus outbreak. He has said to media that his country is touched by India's help for providing medical help and show a gratitude gesture towards India.

"At this difficult time, I am touched by the kindness of Indian friends. All these reminded me of the time when Dr. Kotnis saved many lives and made a great contribution to the Chinese people's liberation cause," said Ambassador Mr. Sun, referring to India Doctor Dwarkanath Kotnis who died in 1942 while treating injured Chinese soldiers in the war against Japan. "Dr. Kotnis is revered figure in China," he added.

Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis was one of five physicians who were sent to China to provide medical help to Chinese soldiers during the second Sino-Japanese War in 1938. He is also known by his Chinese name 'Ke Dihua' in China as he is an idolized figure for Chinese people. Eventually, he got married to a Chinese nurse who was working in the same camp in 1941. A year after the marriage he died at the age of 32 due to suffocation.

Further ambassador Sun added, " The Indian side assured the readiness to stand by China and provide the assistance that India can, to face this challenge. It also reminds me of what I experienced during the outbreak of SARS in 2003. At that time, I had the honor to receive a delegation from India led by the former foreign minister George Fernandes who visited Shanghai during the epidemic."

He said to the media that India and China are keeping active communication regarding the problem and solutions to it. He said, "Recently PM Narendra Modi sent a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping expressing the recognition of the tremendous effort made by the Chinese government to deal with the outbreak."
He asserted that China has put multi-level control and preventions mechanism to fight back and we will win in the fight to curb this life-threatening outbreak. The disease and the government has sufficient resources to cope with economic fluctuations following the epidemic.

Coronavirus aka Covid-19 named by World Health Organisation originated in Wuhan at the end of last year. It has spread widely in China and 30 other countries which has killed 1,900 in China itself.

China has released a list of donor countries that have offered help against the fight, last week. List contains the name of 33 countries that had given medical supplies and 17, which had offered to provide medical supplies and 7 more that offered money and material aid like masks, gloves, suits and all. However, India's name is not on the list.
