11 years old blind student successfully swims across Periyar River

The excitement was overloading at the bank of Periyar River of Aluva Manappuran, Kochi on Tuesday morning. People had gathered to see an 11 years old blind student of the trainer Saji Vaalasseril who was about to cross the river.

Hundreds of people congregated to have a glimpse of 11-year old  R Manoj, a student of the School of Blinds. Because what he was about to do, wasn't an easy task.
Blind by birth, Manoj was getting ready to swim across Periyar River from Advaita Ashram to Aluva Manappuram. He was looking quite confident about this challenging task. He was learning swimming since last month in the guidance of Saji Vaalasseril.
The initiative was flagged off by Swami Swaroopananda Swami, head of Advaita Ashram, around eight in the morning. Friends, family, and teachers of Manoj were cheering him up till he reached the other side of the river.
A band from his school was playing continuously to cheer Manoj till he reached the destination. It took him around 45 minutes to cross the river with all cheering and applauding sound created by the crowd.
'We hear about many cases of drowning every year. Everyone needs to learn swimming to avoid such fatalities. My initiative was to make people aware of this," said Manoj.
His trainer Saji, who has been teaching swimming for the last 11 years for free, said," he is proud of Manoj's achievement."
"It was so easy to train him. Swimming should be part of the school curriculum. Parents too should encourage their children to learn swimming." he added.
