First Muslim married man to be made pontiff at Lingayat Mutt in Karnataka
Hubbali/Karnatak: Anything that happens for the first time in history brings out Alas! A Lingayat Mutt in North Karnataka's Gadag is all set to make a Muslim man its 'Pontiff.' A 33-year-old Diwan Sharief Rahimansab Mulla will be incepted on February 26.
Sharief will be appointed as pontiff of Murugharajendra Koraneshwara Shantidhama Mutt in Asuti village. This mutt is one of the 361 mutts across India of Shri Jagadguru Murugharajendra Mutt of Chitradurga.
''It does not matter what caste you belong to. If God appears to you and shows you the path of goodwill and sacrifice, you will do it regardless of the manmade restrictions of birth,'' said Shri Murugarajendra Koraneshwara Swami.
''No one did ask me to do it, the almighty came in my mind and guided me. Members of Mutt have put the sacred thread and given me the responsibility. They have given me the 'Ishta-linga' and this honor to 'Dharan' the linga. I will follow the path of Dharma. Love and sacrifices are the messages given to me, that is what I want to propagate," Dewan Sharief Mulla said.
Being Muslim is not the only oddity in Sharief's case that has been granted by Lingayat Mutt but also, he is a married man. He is a father of three daughters and one son. This is the first time a family man is being appointed as head of any Lingayat Institution.
It all started as, Sharief's father was influenced by the philosophy of Murugharajendra Koraneshwar Shivayogi, the pontiff of the Khajuri Mutt. "He was a committed follower of Shivayogi and even obtained a 'Linga Deeksha' from the Mutt. He donated two acres of land to the Mutt too, "quoted as saying in the media report.
Sharief used to live on running a flour mill in the neighboring village. Along with the mill he used to conduct discourses of Basavanna's teachings. His work was recognized by Shivayogi who further guided him on his spiritual path.
"All devotees of the Mutt have backed Sharief to be made pontiff. It is an opportunity for us to uphold Basavanna's idea of 'Kalyan Rajya'(Welfare of State), " Shivayogi was quoted by media.
'All devotees of the village are followers of the Mutt irrespective of their caste and religion.' said the prominent member of the Mutt.' He added,' All the members of the Mutt unanimously supported Sharief being the pontiff.'
