Assam river on fire due to burst of underwater oil Pipeline
Guwahati: A small rivulet of Burhi Dihing River exploded as a crude oil pipeline got punctured due to a 'rare instrumentation error'. The leakage results in the massive fire on the rivulet for the last three days. Demonic red hue and huge plumes of smoke rising all over the stream.
A pipeline of the underwater tanks did burst out at Naharkatia town of Dibrugarh district, Guwahati in Assam. A crude oil receiving center of OIL (Oil India Limited) lit up because the failure of the machine caused a puncture in the pipeline and it spilled the oil into the river.
An official of the center said the oil must have fallen into the drain at the point of leakage and merged in the river. Somebody must have thrown the lighted match or cigarette into the river that caused the fire.
Additionally, he said the OIL has already identified the exact location of spillage. The punctured pipes are being repaired. They do have a recovery system of spilled crude oil but it gets challenging when oil spills in running water bodies.
There are no reports of any injuries but the incident has fueled up the fear of serious damage to the local ecology and life underwater.
