Rain Water Harvesting - A need and An art

Save Water, Save lives

Last year drought was declared in Maharashtra, Farmers and their family were struggling to survive. Headlines of all news channel were about suicide of farmers. This scenario wasn't only of Maharashtra State, almost half of India was suffering with this problem and government of all states  were trying to overcome it.

This isn't only government's job to solve this problem. We, as citizens of India, should play our role by using the 3R's i.e. reduce-reuse-recycle . During this exercise RainWater Harvesting is most efficacious way to solve this problem in Metros or all big cities where hundreds or thousands of people live in a single society and  water consumption in those societies goes in hundreds of gallons everyday. Water Harvesting would help us to reuse and save water in daily usage as in toilets, washing cars or watering plants etc.

So, the question is How to do Harvesting of rain water? It is a very simple process.
Basically, Harvesting of rain water is collecting water from surface, that would be from rooftops, floor/ground, through pipes or drains in underground tanks or storage tanks on the ground.

In process of collecting rain water in tanks, its important to keep all the debris away from getting stuck in pipes or drains, for that use some coarse mesh or grills. Grills will hold big debris from going into pipes. Its like first level filtration.

Now we need some big pipes or gutters to channel water to the tank. Pipes can be made of PVC or cement .Water runs off through these pipes and goes to filtration unit.  At the end of pipe which connects to filtration unit install a diversion valve.

Its time to install filtration unit to get  clean water. Filtration can be done with thick layers of gravel, sand and charcoal in drums or earthen pots. This is a natural medium of filtration but nowadays we can find mechanical  filtering units in market to purify the water to make it drinking water.

After running through the filtering unit water goes to the storage tank or underground water tank and its ready to use.

By using these simple steps we can recycle and reuse  in terms of saving gallons of water, so people in need can use it  in warm days.
